When a moviegoer wants a soda, they have to decide whether they want a Coke or a Sprite. When they ask for a medium, you might want your POS operators to ask whether they'd like a large for a very small amount more. And if the customer would also like a burger but doesn't want pickles on it, you need to make sure that information gets to the kitchen.
Item options, upgrades, and modifiers can help you address all of these situations.
Before you begin
Learn about concessions and other items, and then create items.
See below for an example of how to use options and modifiers.
Important!
- Any individual item can use only one of these advanced settings. If you configure an item with options, for example, you can't add upgrades or modifiers to that item.
- When you select the Report as box office check box as you configure an item, you can't add options, upgrades, or modifiers.
- Options can appear in Kiosk, but upgrades and modifiers are only available at POS.
Setting up Options
Options let you group items that are always sold in the same way or let you offer variations on a single item, such as a small soda that's available in many different flavors. When a POS operator taps the button for an item configured with options, they must make a selection before adding the item to the order.
You can use the options setup even when items have different pricing.
Example: You sell three different kinds of wine at three different price points. You can create a "Glass of wine" item, and add all three wine choices to that item. When a POS operator taps the Glass of wine button, they'll select a type of wine and the price of the line item in the order will update to reflect the selection, regardless of the default price you set for the Glass of wine item.
-
Create an item that will collect other existing items in a group.
Example: Create a "single-scoop ice cream" item.
- Go to the Use options tab.
- Click Manage options.
- Click Add to select each item that is an option for the item you're editing.
Example: For Single-scoop ice cream, you might add a vanilla ice cream item, a chocolate ice cream item, and so on.
Tip: Click Quick add items to create a new custom item without leaving the item options page.
- Click Add as options.
- In the Prompt Text field, enter a phrase or question that POS operators see when they select the item you're editing.
Example: Choose your flavor.
- For the Final Sale Price, select either Option price or Parent price.
- Choose Option price to charge the price of the selected option. In the example above this set of steps, each type of wine has its own price and the price of a glass of wine reflects the customer's selection.
- Choose Parent price to charge a single price regardless of the selected option. In the example in step 4 above, a single scoop of ice cream will always have the same price, so it makes sense to maintain pricing for the parent item rather than in the items for each flavor.
- Click Save changes.
Setting up Upgrades
Upgrades are a prompt for POS operators, encouraging them to suggest customers spend a little more to receive a lot more.
Example: A customers asks for a medium popcorn. You've configured an upgrade for the medium popcorn item, so when the POS operator taps the medium popcorn button, a message appears. The message shows the price difference between the medium popcorn and the large popcorn and prompts the POS operator to suggest the customer switch from medium to large for a small price increase. The POS operator can add the large popcorn to the order with a single click.
- Create an item that you want customers to upgrade from (such as a medium popcorn) and an item that you want customers to upgrade to (such as a large popcorn).
- Open the item that you want customers to upgrade from.
- Go to the Use upgrades tab.
- Click Manage upgrades.
- Click Add to select any item that you want customers to upgrade to.
Note: You can select multiple items. When you do, POS operators can select any one of the items you added as the customer's chosen upgrade.
Tip: Click Quick add item to create a new custom item without leaving the item upgrades page.
- Click Add as upgrades.
- In the Prompt text field, enter text that appears when a POS operator selects the item you're configuring.
Example: Would you like to upgrade to a larger size?
Note: There are two POS settings, Upgrade Quantity and Upgrade Value, that are applicable to setting up package items. These settings don't affect item upgrades.
Setting up Modifiers
Modifiers allow your guests to customize the items you offer. Modifiers can be descriptive, such as a request for salad dressing on the side, or they can affect pricing and be separately tracked as inventory, such as extra cheese on a pizza or added avocado on a salad. An item can have any number of modifiers, and those modifiers can be organized into any number of groups. For example, your pizzas might have three choices in a crust group and 10 choices in a toppings group.
When a POS operator taps the button for an item configured with modifiers, they must make a selection before adding the item to the order.
Create items
You need to create each item that customers can modify. You also need to create each modification choice as an item.
-
Create an item that customers can modify.
Example: A salad.
-
Create items for each modifier.
Example: Tofu, chicken, add avocado, add hard-boiled egg, dressing on the side, no tomato, and so on.
Important! The price you specify for an item that you use as a modifier is added to the price of the item it modifies. For example, if you price a salad at $15 and price an "add avocado" item at $2, the line item in the order will be $17 when a POS operator adds the avocado item. The price of a modifier cannot be changed during the ordering process.
Create modifier groups
Group your modification choices to ensure customers select the correct number and types of modifiers, such as exactly one crust option for a pizza and at least one ice cream flavor for a sundae. A modifier group can be linked to multiple items. For example, if you create a proteins group that includes beef, pork, and beans, you can link that proteins group to both your tacos item and your taco salad item.
- Go to Food & items > Modifier Groups.
- Click Add modifier group.
- Enter a name and a label to identify the group.
Note: Group names appear in POS, so be sure to enter names that are clear and intuitive to your staff. Group labels can appear in receipts, depending on your setup. If you want to explore this option, contact Veezi support and be sure to use group label names that will be clear to your customers.
- Select an item class.
Note: Item classes group similar items in reports.
- Enter a minimum and maximum number of modifiers for this item. A POS operator or a customer? must select at least the minimum number and no more than the maximum number of choices from this group.
Example: A Salad Protein group might have a minimum and maximum value of 1, meaning customers must choose the protein that they want. An Additional Instructions group that includes choices like "no dressing," "extra silverware," and so on, might have a minimum value of 0 and a maximum value equal to the number of choices in the group. With this configuration, customers don't need to make any selections, but they have the ability to select all of the available choices.
- Click Manage Modifiers, and then click Add to select each of the items to include in the group.
- Click Save as modifiers.
Add modifier group to items
- Go to Food & items > Concessions and open an item that customers can modify.
- Go to the Use modifiers tab.
- Click Manage Modifiers.
- Click Add to select each modifier group that you want available for the item you're editing.
- Click Save modifier groups.
- Click Save changes.
Example: Using options and modifiers
You offer vanilla ice cream topped with the customer's choice of one of three syrups and two of five candy pieces. The sundae costs $5, but customers can have an additional topping for an extra $1.
You create ten items:
- One item is the sundae, priced at $5.
- Eight items represent the syrup and candy choices. Each of these items is priced at $0.
- One item, named "Extra topping," is priced at $1.
You complete your configuration by grouping and editing items:
- You edit the Extra topping item and add the eight syrup and candy items as options.
- You create a modifier group and add the three syrup items. You set a minimum and maximum value of 1.
- You create a modifier group and add the five candy items. You set a minimum and maximum value of 2.
- You create a modifier group and add the Extra topping item. You set a minimum value of 0 and maximum value of 1.
- You edit the sundae item and add the three modifier groups you created.
When a customer orders a sundae, the POS operator must choose one syrup and two candy options. The POS operator may also choose the Extra topping option, and then indicate the customer's choice of candy. When the Extra topping choice is added, the price on the order increases from $5 to $6.
